Badrinath

Badrinath is another very famous pilgrim spot that is flocked by increasing number of people every year. This holy place of Hindus is a town in the Chamoli district located in the state of Uttarakhand, India. Located close to the banks of river Alaknanda, the place is considered spiritual and auspicious according to Hindu mythology. The significance of Badrinath dates back to ninth century when Adi Shankara established the place as an pilgrimage spot.

In Hindu scriptures and legends of thousands of years, we find the name of Badrinath. The myth goes that the site of Badrinath is sacred for Hindus as it is believed that God Vishnu resides at Badrinath. The main attraction of Badrinath is the temple. The legend goes that Shankara discovered a black stone image of lord Baidrinarayan. It was made of Saligram stone of the Alaknanada river.

Over the past years, the temple of Badrinath has gone through many renovations. In the 17th century, King Garhwal expanded the temple after major damage in the year 1803 due to earthquake. An impressive architectural work, the badrinath temple is approximately 50 ft (15 metres) tall with a small cupola on top, covered with a gold gilt roof. The facade of the temple is built of stone and arched windows. Broad stairway of the temple leads you to a tall arched gateway, which is the main entrance.

As you enter the mandapa, a large pillared hall leads you to the garbha grha, or main shrine area. The walls and pillars of the mandapa are covered with intricate artistic carvings. The style of the temple resembles a Buddhist vihara, with beautiful and brightly painted facade which is typical of Buddhist temples.

If you are planning to visit the Badrinath to attain nirvana, the best time to visit Badrinath is in between the months of June and September. There are many tourist lounges as well as ashrams where you can stay. Enjoy the serene and spiritual feel of the place and make it memorable.
