Tapt Kund

Badrinath temple is one of the holiest pilgrim spots at the divine heights of the Himalayas in the northern part of India along the Tehri-Garhwal hilly trails. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the temple of Badrinath along with the town where it is situated is one of the famous Char Dham. Badrinath Temple is one of the popular 108 Divya Desams or the holy temples for the Vaishnavites. Open for the pilgrims during the six months of each year, particularly from the last part of April to the first part of November, Badrinath temple is closed during the rest of the year due to the harsh climatic conditions in the northern Himalayas. Some of the most interesting pilgrim spots and tourist attractions in Badrinath include the pious hot springs of Tapt Kund.

Badrinath is located at the foothills of the Nar and Narayan mountain ranges, the beauty of the temple being enhanced by the Neelkanth Peak. Sited at an elevation of 3,133 m from the sea level, the temple of Badrinath, positioned along the banks of the Alakananda River, is a famous place of worship of Lord Vishnu. Legend goes that a temple existed at this holy site in the northern part of the country much before the Vedic period in India. The presiding deities in the Badrinath temple include those of Lakshmi, Garud, Ganesh, Parvati and Shiva. Tapt Kund are the holy thermal springs that are placed along the banks of the Alakananda in Badrinath. It’s a sacred ritual popular among the Hindu pilgrims at Badrinath to take a holy bath at Tapt Kund prior to their visit to the Badrinath temple.

It is believed that a person gets purified of all his or her sins if he or she takes a holy dip or bath at the Tapt Kund. The temperature of the sulfurous water at Tapt Kund remains more or less stable at 55°C. Badrinath also boasts of another famous hot water spring, the Surya Kund where people take a ritual bath before entering the holy shrine of Badrinath.
