Badrinath is one of the most famous holy places for the Hindus. Located in a town of the Chamoli district in the state of Uttarakhand, Badrinath attracts both national as well as international tourists in huge numbers. Situated close to the banks of river Alaknanda, the place is considered highly spiritual and auspicious according to Hindu mythology. The significance of Badrinath Temple dates back to ninth century when Adi Shankara established the place as a pilgrimage spot when he got a black stone made of Silgram.

If you visit the Badrinath Temple, you will get to see various murtis or idols. The main idol of the temple is a tall, one meter high statue of Lord Vishnu, locally referred to as Badrinarayan which is both beautiful and significant in relation to the temple. It is made of black Saligram stone and according to Hindu mythology, this statue is one of the eight Swayam Vyakta Keshtras (self manifested statues of Vishnu). Another interesting thing of the temple is its three chambers. These three chambers symbolize three different segments- the first chamber namely Garbha Griha is the hall where the idol is placed. The 2nd chamber of the temple is the Darshan mandap where religious ceremonies and the worship used to take place. Lastly, the third chamber, Sabha Mandap, stands for the hall where devotees flock.
The size of the Badrinath temple is approximately 50 ft (15 metres) tall with a small cupola on top, covered with a gold gilt roof. As you enter the mandapa, a large pillared hall leads you to the garbha grha, or main shrine area. The walls and pillars of the mandapa are covered with intricate artistic carvings. We all know that the temple of Badrinath is dedicated to lord Vishnu but you will find idols of other gods and goddesses too. There are fifteen more ‘murtis’ which include idols of Nara & Narayana, Narasimha (the fourth incarnation of Vishnu), Lakshmi, Narada, Ganesha, Uddhava, Kubera, Garuda (the vehicle of Lord Narayan), and Navadurga.
