Amar Singh Thapa, Founder of Gangotri Temple

Amar Singh Thapa was the general of Nepalese armed forces on the Western Front in the Anglo- Nepalese War. Nepal still reminisce him as their national hero. He had many achievements to his credit. He was involved in many small and bigger wars during his life time as army personnel.
Amar Singh Thapa was also the proud founder of Gangotri Temple. The town of Gangotri is located in Uttarakhand, which was previously located under Uttar Pradesh. Amar Singh Thapa founded Gangotri Temple during the early part of 18th century. Now due to the creations of Gangotri Temple, this has earned acclaim as the major places of pilgrimage not only in the domestic level, but also in the international level. Gangotri Temple is one of the four sites of Chardham pilgrim center.

Amar Singh Thapa retired long before the time of actual retirement and died on his pilgrimage to Gosaikunda. During his tenure in the army he fought against the King of Punjab, Ranjit Singh. He was in charge of the Nepalese Army based near to Mahakali river. Still the pilgrims visit Gangotri and Gaumukh along the Gangotri glacier. There are also opportunities for trekking and mountaineering opportunities available to the pilgrims and the travelers.
