Gangotri Temple is one of the most popular pilgrimage sites of the country. It is located an altitude of around 11000 feet above the ground level. The temple is also located around 250 Kilometers from Rishikesh and around 230 kilometers from Yamunotri. The actual source of the Ganges is Gaumukh which is a 19 kilometer journey from Gangotri.

There are several beliefs we find from various historical records pertaining to Gangotri Temple. Anyhow the belief might differ from one person to another person and also from time to time. Still we can say that Lord Bhagiratha once upon a time prayed at the altar of Gangotri Temple in Uttar Pradesh save his relatives.
In Uttar Pradesh, Gangotri Temple is dedicated to goddess Ganga. This temple is erected close to a sacred stone called Bhagiratha Shila. There is also another historical belief added in this regard. King Bhagiratha must have sat near to the shila that to worship Lord Shiva. Soon after the worship there was a mythological feeling that the Lord Shiva would take the Ganges on his head. On account of this mythological thought aarti is performed by the devotees both in the temple and also on the confluence of the river Ganga. The temple remains from May to early November. From December to March the temple remains closed for the devotees due to extreme climate.
