Doonagiri Glacier is one of the important glaciers of Dhauli Ganga system of glacier, where there are more then 500 glaciers. These glaciers vary in size and shape, which lie in narrow and deep valleys. The important glaciers of this region are Girthi Hoti, Niti and Changbang. The length of Doonagiri Glacier is 5.5 kms, which extend from an elevation of 5150 m at the topmost region, to 4240 m at snout region, the terminal point of Doonagiri Glacier. A stream originated from Doonagiri Glacier and merges to Dhauli Ganga, near Juma village.

Doonagiri Glacier is approachable from Juma village on the way to Joshimath-Malari road, which is 8 kms from Juma at Doonagiri village. From this village of Doonagiri, 12 kms long trekking rail runs along the Doonagiri stream, to reach finally the snout of Doonagiri Glacier. Another glacier in the region is Bagini. The last village in the valley is Doonagiri. The vicinity of Doonagiri Glacier is a good camping spot. The best time to visit Doonagiri Glacier is from mid of May to mid of October.
If you want to reach Doonagiri Glacier by road, the distance between Gaurikhant to Rudraprayag is 78 kms and from Rudraprayag to Rishikesh is 143 kms. the nearest railway station near Doonagiri Glacier is Kathagodam, connected by rail with Lucknow, Howrah and Delhi.
