Satopanth, Bhagirathi - Khark Glacier

Satopanth, Bhagirathi - Khark Glacier are two important glaciers, located in the upper region of Alaknanda basin. These two glaciers are sources of the river Alaknanda. Satopanth, Bhagirathi - Khark Glacier is located within 17 kms from Badrinath, the famous temple in the Chamoli district. The glacier, Saptopanth is probably derived from 2 words, which are Sato meaning Heaven and Panth meaning Way or path.

Satopanth, Bhagirathi - Khark Glacier originate from Chaukhamba peaks which is 7068 m in height and Badrinath, which is 6974 m in height. These peaks separate Satopanth, Bhagirathi - Khark Glacier from the Gangotri group of glacier. Satopanth, Bhagirathi - Khark Glacier are 13 kms and 18 kms respectively in length and terminate from elevation 3810 m and 3820 m respectively.
Satopanth, Bhagirathi - Khark Glacier are approachable from Joshimath in the sub division of Chamoli, on the road of Mana and Badrinath. The route from Mana follows along Alaknanda river. Vasudhara, a waterfall of 145 kms is on the right bank of Alaknanda river at an elevation of 3250 m. 5 km from Vasudhara, there is the snout of Satopanth, Bhagirathi - Khark Glacier. The left bank of the river, 2 kms down the valley, is a camping site. The time of visit of Satopanth, Bhagirathi - Khark Glacier is on in the summer months.
