Adi Shankaracharya was born in Kalady which is a very small village in Kerala, India. His parents were a Nambuthiri brahmin couple and their were called by the name of Shivaguru and Aryamba. He was a special child and in honor of the lord Shiva, Adi Shankaracharya was named as 'Shankara'.
Being the student of Govinda Bhagavatpada, Adi Shankaracharya was a leading name in the Indian philosophical thoughts. The teachings of Adi Shankaracharya are depicting the integrity of the soul and Brahman. In this Philosophical ideology, Brahman is regarded as without attributes. According to the Smarta tradition, Adi Shankara is considered as an embodiment of lord Shiva.
Regarding historical as well as mythical facts, it is known that, Adi Shankara visited India with the aim of spreading his philosophical teachings by discussions and arguments with many other famous philosophers of that time. Later, Adi Shankaracharya grounded four 'mathas' (monasteries). All these monasteries played an important role in the historical exploitation, revival as well as spreading of post-Buddhist Hinduism including Advaita Vedanta. Apart from all these developments of philosophy, Adi Shankara was also acknowledged as the philosopher who found the Dashanami monastic order and the Shanmata custom of adoration.
