Located on the southern parts of the main temple complex the Bhairav Nath Temple also has an ancient legend attached to it. It is believed that during winter when the Kedarnath Temple is closed Lord Bhairav stands guard and wards off any evil. Kedarnath enjoys a close proximity to the Himalayas and naturally suffers a severe winter. It has been observed that during extreme conditions the Kedarnath Temple has been submerged in snow. So it is quite impossible under the circumstances for anybody to stay or visit the temple. It is closed and the resident priests hold out a lot of trust to the ancient belief that Lord Bhairav Nath will stand guard over evil forces. The temple of Bhairav Nath is a small temple and can be visited while approaching the main Kedarnath Temple. Among the temples of Kedarnath the Bhairav Nath Temple is of immense significance. The temple dedicated to Bhairav Nath is the shrine of the guardian angel of Kedarnath.
There is a story relayed to Bhairav Nath and Vaishno Devi. According to this legend once Vaishno Devi appeared in the guise of a young girl and ordered a village priest to arrange for a feast for everybody. Bhairav Nath was also invited to this feast. Intrigued by the small girl Bhairav Nath followed her. And in an encounter was killed by her. Later Vaishno Devi blessed him saying that whoever visited her shrine would also visit his later.Bhairav Nath Temple though not the most important temple at Kedarnath is definitely worth a visit en route to Kedarnath Temple.
