Gaurikund

Located in the most religious place in India, Gaurikund is a much visited pilgrimage spot. It is housed in the state of Uttaranchal in Northern India.

Gaurikund is situated at an altitude of 1982 meters. This ancient pilgrimage spot in India houses a temple of goddess Parvati. There is an interesting piece of history connected to this religious destination. The shrine of Kedarnath is considered to be one of the most holiest of spots in Hindu culture. There are more than 200 temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. Legend has it that the Pandavas after having killed their own cousins and relatives in the battle of Kurukshetra repented and prayed to Lord Shiva. But Lord Shiva went into hiding and refused to grant them redemption. In the guise of a bull he hid in Kedarnath. When he was tracked by the Pandavas, to escape being seen he buried himself inside the ground such that only his hump was visible. The different parts of Lord Shiva appeared in different places and they were worshiped as his embodiments. The trekking base for a visit to Kedarnath is Gaurikund.

This is mainly a small village which houses a hot water spring and a temple dedicated to Goddess Parvati. Goddess Parvati according to ancient Hindu Mythology is the wife of Lord Shiva. Gaurikund is a must stopover en route to Kedarnath. This is as far as the bus travels. After this the devotees travel on foot to tour the temples and shrines of Kedarnath. The temple at Gaurikund also has a legend attached to it. According to this legend Goddess Parvati who is also known by the name of Gauri came to this place to meditate so that she could have Lord Shiva as her husband. So this is a very auspicious place.Pilgrims mostly stop at Gaurikund take rest, bath in its famous hot water pond and visit the Gauri Devi Temple before proceeding towards Kedarnath.
