Jyotirlingas are highly associated with lord Shiva. 'Jyotirlingas', the word comes from the Shivalinga. Shivalinga is a symbol for worshiping the Hindu mythological god Shiva. The ritual of worshiping Shivalinga is a very old practice and the ritual came from the early Indus Valley civilization. The main significance of Shivalinga is that, it is the splendid light form of the supreme power. A Jyotirlinga is a place of worship where Hindu god Shiva is worshiped in the form of a Jyotirlingam or Jyotirlinga.

There are twelve Jyotirlingas in different parts of the India. According to mythological facts, it is believed that lord Shiva first showed himself as a 'Jyotirlinga' on the night of the Aridra Nakshatra (Star).
All the twelve Jyotirlingas and the locations of the twelve Jyotirlingas are provided in the ancient book known as Shiva Purana. Let's see all the twelve Jyotirlingas and their significance-
- Somnath in Saurashtra-It is placed i Saurashtra in Gujrat, India. It is considered as the first Jyotirlinga of the twelve Jyotirlingas.
- Mallikarjun in Srisailam-It is situated on a mountain on the river. The river is called Krishna River. It is in the vicinity of Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh.
- Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain-It is placed in Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh. The Shiv Lingam at the Mahakaleshwar is considered to be the Swayambhu.
- Omkareshwar in Shivpuri / mAmaleswara-This Jyotirlinga is also placed in Madhya Pradesh, India.
- Vaidyanath in Parali- It is located at Deogarh. It is in the Santal Parganas region of Jharkhand state in the south west of Keeul Station. This temple is also known as Vajinath Temple.
- Nageswar in Darukavanam-It is placed in Dwarka in Gujrat.
- Kedareswar in Kedarnath / Himalayas-It is the main Jyotirlinga among all the twelve Jyotirlingas. It is placed in Uttarakhand. It is opened only for six months a year.
- Tryambakeswar in Nasik-It also a popular shrine and it is highly associated with the origin of the famous Godavari river.
- Rameshwar in Setubandanam / Rameshwaram-It is placed in Tamil Nadu. It is known as the southernmost Jyotirlinga among the twelve Jyotirlinga of India.
- Bhimashankar in Dakini-It is situated in Maharashtra.
- Visweswar in Varanasi-It is founded in Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh.
- Ghrishneswar in Devasrovar-It is placed very close to the rock-cut temples of Ellora in Aurangabad, Maharashtra.
